These Yunomi feature two of the quintessential and well-loved works by Hokusai Katsushika (1760 - 1849). It is said that Hokusai is the most famous UKIYOE Japanese woodblock print artisan and influenced the impressionist painters such as Vincent van Gogh. AKA FUJI and URANAMI are painted on these Yunomi by Zenshoh Yamaoka, who is the leading expert on painting derived from masterpieces in the middle ages. Both are painted exquisitely and precisely and they recall Hokusai's UKIYOE works faithfully.

AKA of this name mean red color in Japanese. AKA FUJI is one of the most representative of Hokusai's series, FUGAKU 36 KEI, 36 marvelous views of Mt. Fuji. AKA FUJI expresses that the morning sun brings red color to Mt. Fuji in late summer to early autumn. The AKA FUJI is painted grandly and exquisitely. Sunrise and Mt. Fuji are both regarded as auspicious.

This image is remarkable because Mt. Fuji, which should essentially be grandly and exquisitely painted, is painted small at the middle of the painting, and the great waves and ships rocked by the billowing sea are painted dynamically and vividly. The contrast of waves and silence of Mt. Fuji, and one more contrast brought by perspective create much visual interest.

We don't usually add pillbox-style Yunomi like those used at SUSHI restaurants because the majority of pillbox-style Yunomi are suitable for drinking low grade teas. It is difficult to find high quality Yunomi of this particular style. However, these Yunomi are suitable for high grade tea due to the quality and well-planned design. They are opened widely toward the outside which helps feel soft in the mouth and delicately appreciate the subtle taste of high grade tea. And as above, these Yunomi are painted quite exquisitely and precisely. And the images are so quintessential and well-loved, we could not help adding these Yunomi to our lines.

Kagetsu Hara

Kagetsu Hara was born in Kyoto in 1971. He is known for his mastery of a wide range of traditional ceramic techniques. He won awards for competitions in Kyoto Prefecture. He studied and worked under his father, Kiyokazu Hara. Many of his works feature some traditional technique such as MISHIMA, HAKEME, KOBIKI, and so on, which are taken over from his father. His representative delicate techniques receive a high evaluation.

Zenshoh Yamaoka

Zenshoh Yamaoka was born in 1942. He worked under Zenjiroh Ueyama for 10 years, and then opened his own Zenshoh kiln in 1969.
His paints derived from masterpieces in the middle ages are excellent. It is said his precise drawing techniques are in a class of their own. Indeed, he was officially designated as the traditional craftsman by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2002. His sophisticated, exquisite, elegant, and advanced drawing techniques receive high acclaim in the Kyo Yaki pottery industry.
