Price Revision - Kyoto Crop Report 2026
The Situation of This Year’s New Crops in Kyoto in 2026
June 2026
The Kyoto Prefectural Tea Chamber
The Kyoto Prefectural Tea Chamber
The report shows that nationwide tea prices have continued to surge since last year, with this year’s prices surpassing previous levels. The sharp rise affects all tea kinds, including Tencha (Matcha raw material). Growers are increasingly shifting toward Tencha, leading to declining output of other tea kinds. This reduction in supply is contributing significantly to higher prices across the market.
- Tea Production Volume
- Hand-picked Tencha rose 48.7% YOY, and machine-picked Tencha rose 24.7%. In contrast, Gyokuro, Kabusecha (Sencha shaded for short-term), and Sencha each saw declines of about 20%, reflecting a continued shift toward Tencha cultivation. Karinaoshi (Houjicha raw material) also decreased by 5.8%, falling to less than half of its 2023 level.
- The Price of Tea
- Prices rose sharply across all tea varieties. Tencha continued its upward trend, with hand-picked Tencha increasing 20.2% YOY and machine-picked Tencha rising 22.4%. Other teas saw even steeper jumps: Gyokuro, Kabusecha, and Sencha climbed 50?80% YOY. Karinaoshi jumped 138%, now priced over four times its 2023 level.
- Summary
- Prices remain extremely high, and the situation has not improved since last year. Demand for Tencha continues to surge while production of other tea kinds keeps falling, pushing overall prices upward. This decline in non?Tencha production is now seriously disrupting sales of the 2026 harvest. We decided to reveal what we are going through, wishing to have your generous understanding.
