This exceptional Yunomi is a masterful expression of Japan’s ancient ceramic heritage, created using the revered technique of WARA HAIYU - a method rooted in nature, fire, and time itself.

The glaze, formulated from the ash of burned rice straw, appears brown at first glance, but a subtle purple hue emerges elegantly depending on the light and viewing angle, creating a sense of depth and quiet refinement. Unlike industrial ceramics, whose perfection is controlled and repeatable, this Yunomi embraces the unpredictable poetry of the kiln. Subtle variations in flame, atmosphere, and mineral interaction give rise to YOHEN - natural kiln transformations that ensure no two pieces can ever exist in the same way.

HAIYU in Japan dates to the 5th century, when natural ash from wood-fired kilns accidentally settled upon Sue ware, creating an unintended glass-like surface. Over centuries, this serendipitous occurrence evolved into a refined aesthetic pursuit. WARA HAIYU remains one of the most organic and technically demanding expressions of this tradition.

This distinctive deep reddish-purple color of SHIDOH YOHEN is created by adding a small amount of copper oxide to the glaze. By firing the glazed Yunomi at a high temperature for an extended period, a unique depth of color is produced, giving the piece a remarkably bold and striking presence.

KODAI reflects the artisan’s approach of pursuing innovative and playful expression while respecting tradition. Four facets have been carefully cut into the area where the KODAI meets the body, adding a sense of movement and strength to the otherwise simple form of the Yunomi.

During firing, a seashell is placed beneath the KODAI base, causing the clay to blush into a natural orange known as HIIRO scarlet. This spontaneous, flame-born coloration is never predictable, further affirming its individuality. Inside the KODAI base, a spiral carving called TOKIN - traditionally associated with RAKU YAKI - has been deliberately incorporated, a refined nod to Japan’s ceramic lineage.

Along the rim, iron has been applied over the glaze and fired in oxidation, producing a warm amber hue that further enriches the piece both visually and tactually. The gentle contrast between the deep reddish-purple body and the amber-colored rim adds a distinctive accent to this Yunomi.

This Yunomi embodies the authentic value of a handcrafted work: shaped by nature, guided by the skill of the artisan, and destined to never be exactly replicated.
