KATAKUCHI Matcha Bowl is a Matcha bowl with a pour spout. Kata means one side and Kuchi means spout. KATAKUCHI can be used to whisk Matcha for several people at the same time and pour it into different cups. When making a Matcha latte, it is convenient to pour the Matcha into the milk after it has been whisked in this bowl.
This Matcha bowl features numerous vertically curved lines created by the technique called KUSHIME, which impacts the flow of the glaze and creates uncontrolled shifts in tone. Some parts look darker, where curved lines are filled with glaze, and some parts look brighter where the raised clay appears on top.
Its organic form reveals different expressions depending on the viewing angle. As you hold it, the surface offers a quietly satisfying texture - subtle, intricate, and responsive. There is a delicate sensitivity to it, a tactile harmony that seems to settle naturally into your hand.
This unique shape is one of the traditional forms called TENMOKU Chawan. A part of the rim is uniquely hollowed in a horizontal form in the traditional style. It is quite rare to see a KATAKUCHI bowl crafted in the TENMOKU style, and this rarity lends the piece an especially refined and stylish elegance.
Creating the natural flow of glaze inside and outside the bowl demands exceptional skill. The rim is coated with a top layer of glaze that melts in the kiln and flows according to the kiln’s temperature. Mr. Jihyoue Katoh carefully adjusts the heat to control this movement, stopping it at just the right moment to achieve a striking contrast between the upper and lower glazes. The glaze flow is also influenced by the bowl’s position in the kiln and the thickness of the glaze on the rim. Hotter spots create faster flow, while thicker glaze moves more slowly. By mastering all these variables, Mr. Katoh produces delicate, one of a kind pieces, each with its own unique expression.
You can see KANNYU, another glazing technique which gives the appearance of a cracked surface. The KANNYU pattern faintly appears over the whole surface of this bowl, which deepens the warm atmosphere. The colors settle into the tiny cracks, creating gentle shifts in tone and texture in each pattern.
Three INKA stamps near the rim add charm to this Matcha bowl. The stamps create a satisfying texture and a sense of mystery. Each hand stamped INKA carries its own subtle variation in shape and size, revealing the artisan’s playful touch. Like quiet constellations pressed into clay, the stamps guide the eye in a gentle, wandering rhythm. Altogether, the piece becomes a beautiful balance of spirited creativity and refined craftsmanship.
The outstanding craftsmanship and beautiful design of the KATAKUCHI Matcha Bowl will make you want to display it in your home. The interplay between modern design and WABI-SABI colors creates a unique charm in which novelty and nostalgia coexist.
