Traditional Kyo-Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Shihoh Itoh at Shihoh Kiln
This Yunomi is filled with cherry blossoms not only on the outside but also on the top side of the inside, all drawn by hand. The delicate touch of the brush reminds us of petals reflected on the surface of a river. It is simple yet graceful work.
AKA means red, and SAKURA DUME means to draw a continuous cherry blossom pattern without gaps.
It is not easy to draw so many petals all by hand with such a thin and delicate touch. Color tints vary depending on the amount of paint used, so it takes great skill to paint evenly. Moreover, not only the outside but also the inside is drawn. It is not hard to imagine that this is an extremely difficult technique.
Not only the beauty of the painting, but the shape of this Yunomi also shows skilled craftsmanship. This vase-like form highlights the softness and beauty of cherry blossoms. The outer part has been elaborately shaved by hand, and these vertical shaving lines make the teacup light. Furthermore, this makes it fit comfortably in the hand, creating an elegant atmosphere. The shaved parts are so thin that light can be seen through them when held up to the sun. If it is too thin, it will break in the kiln. The shaving process can only be done by hand, and high-level expertise is required.
The manufacturing process uses Japanese traditional techniques. Once the shape is formed, it is fired before the petals are drawn. And then fired many times in the kiln after drawing.
Therefore, much time and effort went into the completion of this teacup.
This is the perfect item to enrich your tea time and it would also make a lovely gift. We are certain that this charming teacup will bring a feeling of springtime in Japan to your heart.
