What will attract you at first glance is its color, reminiscent of the deep ocean. That is where the name “RURI” comes from. RURI is the Japanese word for the color of lapis lazuli. When you look inside, the shadows of the walls make the blue appear even deeper and richer.
On the outer surface, you see the geometric pattern called ASANOHA, which is painted by hand. The pattern on each Yunomi is unique. ASANOHA means hemp leaves in Japanese, and this pattern is named after the resemblance to the leaves. It has long been a traditional pattern to be seen on YUKATA or traditional crafts. Since hemp grows quickly and sturdily, this auspicious pattern represents a wish for the healthy growth of children.
The pattern is done with the traditional technique called ICCHIN, in which clay or glaze is squeezed out using a cylindrical tool to create a decorative raised, tactile pattern. Not only the design but also its practicality makes this Yunomi outstanding. It is stackable, which is very rare for Japanese Yunomi. The more you stack in your kitchen or dining area, the more beautiful the display, as each Yunomi nestles with its adjoining neighbor.
