Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln
This porcelain Matcha Bowl creates an aura of elegance and a unique pleasant cooling sensation. It is said that it is very difficult for porcelain or earthenware to create a cooling sensation. HANA KESSHO, composed with some colors and some kind of works, is a new line of Tohan Kiln.
The shape is a traditional form used for TENMOKU Chawan or white porcelain Chawan. The shape matches with the elegant crystal glaze very well. HANA of this name means flower and KESSHO means crystal in Japanese. This item is finished by the technique called Crystal glaze. The technique is to mix certain metal substances into a clear glaze, creating the pattern like crystal on the surface by a chemical reaction which occurs during the heating process in the kiln. The crystal glaze pattern, reminiscent of flowers, is quite elegant, and the smooth glossy porcelain atmosphere is exquisite.
To heat Crystal glaze porcelain, extremely delicate and sensitive temperature management in the kiln is required. In the modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in the kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Needless to say, even in the same kiln, the temperature is different by location. However, to produce a stable Crystal glaze porcelain, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, Crystal glaze porcelain has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create. Tohan Kiln has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate new kiln and glaze techniques for generations, and the continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful Crystal glaze porcelain at a reasonable price.
USU means pale in Japanese, describing a soft and subtle tone of color and FUJI means wisteria in Japanese. It expresses noble elegant purple color glaze which was newly developed at Tohan Kiln. The color is not too assertive or vocal, but calm, polite, and beautiful. This USU FUJI color strikingly attracts the viewers' eye. This Matcha bowl will deepen your green moment not only in the summer season but also throughout the year. Experience the world of Tohan, which is widely acclaimed across many fields.
