AKA MATSU, or Japanese Red Pine, is celebrated as one of the auspicious trios ‘Sho-Chiku-Bai’ (Pine, Bamboo, and Plum), a traditional motif symbolizing good fortune. Thriving even in harsh conditions, the pine remains evergreen throughout the four seasons and grows into a great tree for centuries - often said to live for a thousand years - making it a powerful emblem of longevity.
In Japan, the pine is both familiar and deeply revered, embodying sacredness and purity. With cherished memories of playing beneath pine trees in childhood, the artist painted each stroke with heartfelt prayers for your long life and well-being.
Delicately depicted along the trunk is moss, another auspicious symbol of longevity and prosperity. As expressed in Japan’s national anthem, ‘Kimigayo’ in the phrase ‘until pebbles grow into boulders covered with moss,’ moss represents the quiet passage of great lengths of time. Its enduring green vitality further signifies lasting prosperity and the wish to remain forever youthful.
May this piece bring with it the timeless strength of the pine and the gentle blessing of moss - symbols of enduring happiness and flourishing years ahead.
Colorful patches of orange are called GOHONDE, a traditional technique that adds warmth to the atmosphere of the work. It is impossible to fully control the contrasting density of GOHONDE, so that GOHONDE is a little different in each work.
As you enjoy your Matcha while sensing the vibrant life force of the red pine and moss, you may feel the quiet passage of time itself. It will certainly add joy to your green moment.
