Natsume – Mizume AKA SURI (handcrafted canister)

Handcrafted Matcha Canister, diameter: 2.56inch (6.5cm) height: 2.56inch (6.5cm), Material: Wood, Traditional Yamanaka Nuri Lacquer Craft

A Natsume is a traditional tea caddy used in the Japanese tea ceremony to store Matcha. The name 'Natsume' originally refers to the jujube fruit, and this tea utensil came to be called so because its elegant form closely resembles the fruit itself.

Yamanaka Nuri is well known for high-quality lacquerware. Yamanaka is located in Ishikawa Prefecture and faces the Sea of Japan. It is about 200km (124miles) from Kyoto, which had been the MIYAKO capital of Japan for over a thousand years. There are many sophisticated works in Yamanaka Nuri lacquer craft.

'Mizume' refers to Mizume Zakura, a type of wood traditionally used for the base of high-quality lacquerware before coating. Although it belongs to the birch family and is not a true cherry tree, it is named for its cherry-like bark.

'Mizume' is prized for its smooth texture and beautifully refined grain, making it one of the most prestigious and rare materials for lacquerware bases. Over time and with continued use, the wood develops a warm, honey-like tone and a richer luster, enhancing its natural beauty.

'Aka Suri' is distinguished by its luminous red finish through which the natural wood grain and subtle texture remain beautifully visible beneath the surface. This effect is achieved through the traditional Fuki-Urushi (wiped lacquer) technique, where layers of lacquer are repeatedly applied and carefully wiped away.

'Aka' refers to the red color, yet it is far more than a single flat color. As the red lacquer seeps into the wood’s natural grain, it creates a finish rich in depth, dimension, and organic character that is alive with texture and warmth.

Elevate your Matcha ritual, as your Natsume deepens in color, character, and beauty with the passage of time.

Yamanaka lacquerware

The history of Yamanaka lacquerware dates to the Azuchi-Momoyama period, when a group of woodturners migrated from the province of Echizen to the village of Manago in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City. Initially, they produced wooden items as souvenirs for visitors to the Yamanaka hot springs. From the mid-Edo period onward, they began incorporating lacquering and Maki-e techniques from regions such as Aizu, Kyoto, and Kanazawa, developing into a major production center for lacquered tea utensils and other fine wares.
