Natsume – Nanako Nuri AKANE (handcrafted canister)

Handcrafted Matcha Canister, diameter: 2.59inch (6.6cm) height: 2.48inch (6.3cm), Material: Wood composite, Traditional Nanako Nuri Lacquer Craft

A Natsume is a traditional tea caddy used in the Japanese tea ceremony to store Matcha. The name “Natsume” originally refers to the jujube fruit, and this tea utensil came to be called so because its elegant form closely resembles the fruit itself.

Beyond its ceremonial role, the Natsume has evolved into a sophisticated object of beauty. Modern designs allow it to be enjoyed as an interior accent, harmonizing effortlessly with contemporary spaces. Whether for everyday use, entertaining guests, or as a display piece, a lacquered Natsume elevates the experience. When paired with high-quality Matcha, a lacquerware Natsume offers a sense of quiet luxury and refinement.

This piece features Nanako Nuri, a distinguished Tsugaru lacquer technique characterized by delicate circular patterns. These motifs are created by sprinkling rapeseeds onto freshly applied lacquer, resulting in organic variations where no two circles are identical.

The process is extraordinarily meticulous. Unlike other techniques, Nanako Nuri has a very subtle texture, making uniform polishing quite difficult. Only highly skilled artisans with years of experience can achieve a flawless finish, and any misstep can erase the pattern or create uneven tones. This technical mastery is why Nanako Nuri commands a higher value despite fewer lacquer layers.

Each Natsume is handcrafted with the utmost care, one by one. Perfect for personal use or as a truly meaningful gift, this is a timeless work of art that embodies the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship. We invite you to experience its quiet luxury for yourself.

Specially packaged in a carton box.
Made in Japan.
(Please note that each Nanako Nuri lacquer craft piece is handmade, so the pattern may vary slightly.)

Nanako Nuri

Nanako Nuri is one of the four techniques used to make Tsugaru Nuri lacquer craft. It is said to have existed since ancient times, long before Tsugaru Nuri began. Seed lacquer (a specially mixed lacquer used only for Nanako Nuri) is applied carefully and evenly, and then rapeseeds are sprinkled onto the surface. After they have dried for one to two days, the seeds are removed. To even out the height of the pattern, the surface is lightly sanded with files or whetstones. Then, several coats of colored lacquer are applied, polished, and finished. Tsugaru Nuri lacquer craft is strong and beautiful. It has been around for over 300 years.
