This SAKURA Yunomi is one of the six FUJIYAMA Yunomi series, and a long-selling favorite in Japan, created by the artist for over 30 years. Turned upside down, it looks like Mt. Fuji. Cherry blossoms, a well-loved symbol of Japan, are painted inside gracefully.
This Yunomi teacup features GOHRA no SAKURA. SAKURA means cherry blossoms, and GOHRA is one of the famous views of Mt. Fuji. GOHRA no SAKURA is one of the most famous spots around Mt. Fuji. The cherry tree is in full bloom with a soft and warm pink color. The combination is complementary, and the scene is quite peaceful and graceful.
Cherry blossoms, a well-loved symbol of Japan, are painted inside gracefully. Shunzan has a great respect for artist Kenzan Ogata (1663-1743) who was one of the first to paint four seasons flowers on pottery in Japan.
To create the form like Mt. Fuji, Shunzan Mori uses a rare traditional technique called TATARA. Clay formed into a sheet is put on a stone mason form and shaped by hand. The TATARA technique was used before the pottery wheel. Though it requires more time than the pottery wheel, it creates a unique form which can't be created by the wheel. Ridge line of Mt. Fuji is well expressed on the side silhouette of this Yunomi by the TATARA technique. Vertical indentations inside the Yunomi are made by the TATARA technique and add layers of visual interest. The true atmosphere of Mt. Fuji could never be created by the wheel, only by TATARA.
The silhouette is formed in the shape of Mt. Fuji. The base is carved in a circle shape like the crater at the top of the mountain.
Colorful patches of orange are called GOHONDE, a traditional technique that adds warmth to the atmosphere of the work. It is impossible to fully control the contrasting density of GOHONDE, so that GOHONDE is a little different in each work.
This teacup is widely opened to the rim, so that it has many uses. It is possible to use this as a small plate for appetizers or tapas. It can also be used to serve ice cream. It completely depends on you how much this multi-cup can broaden your green moment - you are limited only by your imagination!
