Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Kohgiku Nakamura in Kohgiku Kiln
The painting of HANA KOGIKU follows the traditional techniques of Kyo Yaki style, but the artist has painted colorful and eye-soothing chrysanthemums on the front and inside, which brings a casual and modern atmosphere to this work.
HANA means flowers, and KOGIKU means small chrysanthemums in Japanese. Chrysanthemum is one of the autumn flowers of Japan and has been regarded as a noble flower. It is used in the crest of the Emperor and the Imperial Household. It also symbolizes longevity, so it can be found everywhere in Japan, such as the cover of the passport, design of Kimono, and so on. Needless to say, Chrysanthemum is a beloved flower throughout the whole history of Japan.
This Matcha bowl features beautifully painted small chrysanthemum flowers. This painting is based on the traditional technique of Kyo Yaki style, but spreading many chrysanthemums over the surface produces a casual and modern atmosphere which traditional Kyo Yaki pottery does not have. The bold and cheerful pattern of flowers gives a comfortable sense of affinity and harmony between its casualness and tradition.
Of particular note is the expert use of paint and gold. For the petals of the Chrysanthemum, the artisan placed a thick layer to create three-dimensional texture. When you hold the bowl to enjoy Matcha, your palms will feel the gentle bumps of the petals. Achieving this effect in paint requires advanced techniques because the paint can peel or crack depending on its thickness and the firing temperature. The artisan added a sophisticated and noble atmosphere to the cheerful patterns by adopting this skillful technique. When looking at the leaves, you will see the pure gold paint used to represent the veins of the leaves. The artisan uses particularly pure gold for this part, which makes the painting both tranquil and luxurious.
Horizontal orange line inside the bowl is a technique known as GOHONDE in Japanese. Its line adds warmth to the atmosphere of the work. This pattern of Matcha bowl is composed with autumn flowers, but may be used throughout the year. Considering the quality, this Matcha bowl is extremely reasonable in price.
We are certain that you will enjoy not only drinking Matcha but also immersing yourself in the cheerful atmosphere of colorful Japanese chrysanthemums.
