This porcelain Matcha Bowl creates an aura of elegance and unique pleasant cooling sensation. It is said that it is very difficult for porcelain or earthenware to create a cooling sensation. HANA KESSHO line, composed with some colors and some kinds of works, is a new line of Tohan Kiln.

The shape is one of traditional forms which is used for TENMOKU Chawan or white porcelain Chawan. The shape matches with the elegant crystal glaze very well.

HANA of this name means flower and KESSHO means crystal in Japanese. This item is finished by the technique called Crystal glaze. The technique is to mix certain metal substances into a clear glaze creating the pattern like crystal on the surface by a chemical reaction which occurs during the heating process in the kiln. Crystal glaze patterns that look like flowers are quite elegant. The smooth glossy porcelain atmosphere is exquisite.

To heat Crystal glaze porcelain, extremely delicate and sensitive temperature management in the kiln is required. In the modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in the kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Even in the same kiln, the temperature differs by location. However, to produce a stable Crystal glaze porcelain, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, Crystal glaze porcelain has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create. Tohan Kiln has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate kiln, glaze, and so on for generations, and the continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful Crystal glaze porcelain at a reasonable price.

The traditional Japanese color HAICHA has been admired since the Edo period. Its muted brown, like tea touched with a hint of ash, carries a quiet refinement. It is subtle yet dignified, understated yet sophisticated. The brilliance of HANA KESSHO is applied not to porcelain but to earthenware. The natural clay tones gently emerge through the glaze, adding warmth and depth that allow the piece to blend seamlessly into daily life.

This is beauty with composure — an elegance that reflects the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi: finding grace in simplicity, tranquility, and the passage of time.

Tohan Dobuchi

Mr. Tohan Dobuchi was born in 1980 and is the fourth Tohan. The first Tohan Dobuchi opened Tohan Kiln in 1922. The present Tohan Dobuchi succeeded the fourth in 2011. The third Tohan’s art was full of creative energy, as he was naturally inquisitive and enjoyed exploring new techniques and designs. He studied glaze in Germany, so his works stand out from other Kyo Yaki. In the artworks of Tohan, they are incorporated with designs of flowering grasses that are found in nature. The third Tohan developed Tohan’s original world of glaze, color and design. The fourth Tohan has been developing new Tohan worlds like HANA KESSHO crystal glaze lines. And these days, Tohan Kiln also creates beautiful lamps, tables and other interior designs. Their works receive a high evaluation from not only the ceramic industry but also various fields.
