Traditional Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Yoshinobu Kawashima in Kohzoh Kiln
This Yunomi has two contradictory expressions: the dynamic designs by paint brush and the refined and delicate stamped patterns. The three-color contrast created by glaze enhances not only each color, but also the overall composition. The more we look carefully, the more we will notice the beauty of contrast.
TETSU means a painting by TETSU iron glaze, and MISHIMA means stamped pattern. Three different lines are designed in green ORIBE glaze with three different stamps decorated in a consecutive manner.
Each of the three stamps has the meaning of “longevity” and is extremely auspicious. These simply designed stamps evoke a stylish and calm impression. They are called YABANE, UZUMON, and INKAMON, respectively, and have the following meanings.
・YABANE (fletching): Fletching have been considered auspicious because of connotations of protection against evil, success in life, and a lasting marriage.
・UZUMON (swirl pattern): Swirls symbolize prosperity, development, and continuous growth, and because of their unbroken continuity, swirls have been thought to represent continuous development.
・INKAMON (flower stamps): This design means prosperity of offspring, longevity and wealth.
In contrast, between each stamp is a design of flowers and grasses, which evoke a powerful life force. Each of these also have the meaning of longevity. KARAKUSA (Arabesque pattern), TAKE (Bamboo pattern), and abstract floral pattern represent movement and change and give us an energetic impression. Red flourishes add to this cup’s distinctive style.
The contrast between the flamboyance and movement of these flowers and grasses and the static stamping makes the beauty of this Yunomi unique.
In the inside of the teacup, linear marks made by brush are dynamically implemented. This traditional technique, called HAKEME, evokes the powerful image of this teacup. And the inside of the KOHDAI is covered with a transparent glaze, making this Yunomi a very labor-intensive piece. These are the craftsman's special touches.
The design and color contrast are well harmonized on this Yunomi teacup. Viewing this cup from different angles, we can enjoy various aspects and atmospheres. We are certain that this Yunomi will enhance your tea time.
