Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln
In Japanese, HANA means "flower" and KESSHO means "crystal." This porcelain Yunomi emits a unique, pleasant cooling sensation. It is said that it is very difficult to create a cooling sensation with porcelain or earthenware.
This item is finished using a technique called crystal glaze. This technique involves mixing certain metal substances into a clear glaze, which creates a crystal-like pattern on the surface through a chemical reaction that occurs during the heating process in the kiln. The crystal glaze pattern resembles a flower, and the smooth, glossy porcelain is exquisite.
The teacup's rim is beautifully flared, its middle is full, and its bottom is tucked. The curve from the rim to the base is beautiful and comfortable to hold. The form matches the HANA KESSHO crystal glaze and helps create a unique aura.
Traditionally, HANA KESSHO is crafted from porcelain, but this earthenware piece deliberately features wheel marks that allow you to feel the warmth of the clay. The rustic warmth of the earth harmonizes with the brilliance of the HANA KESSHO, creating a sophisticated beauty that embodies the serene and powerful tranquility of the land.
SABIASAGI, a traditional Japanese color, is a shade of ASAGI, a greenish-blue tinged with melancholy. The SABI (rust) in its name suggests an artful patina that lends ASAGI subtle complexity, defining it as a grayish blue-green that feels ancient and tranquil.
In Japan, highest quality Kyo Yaki porcelain such as this is purchased with the intent that it will be passed down from generation to generation.
