Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln
This pottery Matcha bowl creates an aura of elegance and a unique pleasant cooling sensation. It is said that it is very difficult for porcelain or earthenware to evoke the sensation of cooling. This Matcha bowl is part of a new line of HANA KESSHO tea ware. Other HANA KESSHO lines are porcelain but this new line is pottery. The fact that it is pottery instead of porcelain helps to create the unique aura.
The shape is one of the traditional forms while being quite sophisticated and modern. The unique and elegant shape matches with the exquisite crystal glaze very well.
HANA of this name means flower and KESSHO means crystal in Japanese. This item is finished by the technique called Crystal glaze. The technique is to mix certain metal substances into a clear glaze creating the pattern like crystal on the surface by a chemical reaction which occurs during the heating process in the kiln. The crystal glaze pattern like flowers is quite elegant, and the smooth glossy porcelain atmosphere is exquisite.
To heat Crystal glaze porcelain, extremely delicate and sensitive temperature management in the kiln is required. In the modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in the kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Needless to say, even in the same kiln, the temperature is different by location. However, to produce a stable Crystal glaze porcelain, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, Crystal glaze porcelain has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create. Tohan Kiln has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate the kiln, glaze, and so on for generations, and the continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful Crystal glaze porcelain at a reasonable price.
SABI of this name means a sober and quiet mood. ASAGI is one of the ancient traditional colors in Japan. ASAGI color was exquisite and used for court nobles’ clothes. This glaze is coated on pottery not porcelain, so the color evokes a calm and quiet mood, yet its striking appearance catches the eye. This Matcha bowl will deepen your green moment not only in the summer season but also throughout the year.
