This Yunomi is simple yet expresses the beauty of grapes, which are called BUDOH in Japanese. BUDOH are a symbol of success and good fortune because of the vigor of the vine and its abundant fruitfulness. Japanese grapes decorate the surface of the teacup and the creamy color glaze not only adds accent to the grapes but also to the unique shape of the teacup.

UKI HANA BUDOH means floating grapes. The name was inspired by the three-dimensionally expressed grapes on the surface of this teacup. Grapes have appeared in Japanese literature and WAKA poems since ancient times and have been a favorite motif among tea masters.

The artisan Yoshinobu Kawashima has used a special technique to carve the surface of the teacup, making the grapes appear to float. In addition, gold, purple, navy and green are added to give the teacup a rich overall coloring.

This unique handmade teacup is formed by the TATARA technique. The main feature of the TATARA technique is that the ceramic clay is stretched into a sheet shape before being formed into a vessel. UKI HANA TSUBAKI has a unique shape, almost a cube, but it expresses the characteristics of pottery made with the TATARA technique. The shape of this teacup makes it comfortable to hold and evokes a charming WABI-SABI atmosphere.

The color of Japanese green tea will enliven this teacup even more, once the tea is poured into the cup. We are certain that this Yunomi will enrich your tea time.

Yoshinobu Kawashima

Yoshinobu Kawashima was born in Osaka in 1956. He graduated from technical high school in the pottery and porcelain department in 1978, and worked and learned at two famous kilns in Kyoto for 6 years. At the age of 28, he engaged in pottery making under his father’s kiln, which was founded in 1950, and took over his kiln in 2012. His work has won many awards in Kyoto, such as the best design exhibition in 1991.
His work is very famous, especially his painting and decoration technique. He also makes good use of earthenware, especially the use of color. His profound and warm tea ware is highly praised.
