AOSUDARE is inspired by the designs found in traditional Shigaraki pottery. This Matcha bowl, with its outwardly widened rim and beautiful vertical lines of glaze, is full of charm, backed by the artisan's ingenuity and deep knowledge of Matcha.

AOSUDARE means green bamboo screen. This design was common in traditional Shigaraki-yaki tea pots around the Edo period. Special white glaze made from a mixture of straw ash and feldspar is used throughout. Beautiful lines of gold, yellow-green, and emerald ORIBE glaze are added to its surface. The lines in the foreground and background, visible from the front, are beautifully blurred by the gradation with white glaze.

The shape of the Matcha bowl is similar to that called KITTACHI form, but the rim opens slightly outward. This modest but open arrangement has a wonderful effect on the overall appearance of this Matcha bowl. The waist has a dignified appearance and is strongly accented by a single crisp horizontal line. It is slightly curved from the waist to the KOHDAI base, with a glaze pool in the middle. This curve has a positive effect not only on the appearance but also on the ease of making Matcha. The KOHDAI base also extends slightly outward, in perfect balance with the widening of the rim. This attention to detail adds to the overall impression.

On the side, you can see finger marks made by the artisan while the bowl was being created on the pottery wheel. This horizontal line and the beautiful ORIBE glaze flowing vertically intersect beautifully, expressing the SUDARE weave. AOSUDARE is also used as a summer term in traditional Japanese haiku culture. The AOSUDARE on this Matcha bowl seems to create a sense of summer freshness and openness, yet the design is perfect for any season.

This Matcha bowl was completed after much trial and error to achieve the ideal balance of form, glaze, and firing temperature. This is a Matcha bowl that has achieved a high level of visual beauty and ease of use, and is certainly more valuable than its price. It is truly refreshing to drink Matcha from this charming bowl. Your time spent with AOSUDARE will be pure delight.
