Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Shunzan Mori at Shunzan Kiln
This Yunomi teacup is graceful and dignified. The combination of the elegant gold painting and the quaint and charming clay is unique. MOMIJI means autumn red leaves in Japanese. They are a well-loved symbol of autumn, like the SAKURA national flower of Japan is a symbol of spring. The refined beauty of MOMIJI is well expressed on this Yunomi. The contrast of maple leaves in both deep and light colors, suggests that the maple leaves are at the height of their autumn glory.
Three different colors of MOMIJI are painted inside and outside of the Yunomi teacup. At first, black MOMIJI are painted using iron glaze and then after firing, other red color MOMIJI are painted.
This Yunomi teacup is the traditional standard Kyo Yaki shape. However, the artisan Shunzan Mori has added a few special touches, such as linear patterns carved on the side and a spiral on the lowest point of the inside. The base is carefully carved to a unique shape. He also applies iron glaze at the rim to tighten the design. It is called KUCHIBENI (lipstick) or KUCHISABI. These special techniques bring a gentle accent to the atmosphere.
Colorful patches and ring of orange are called GOHONDE, a traditional technique that adds warmth to the atmosphere of the work. It is impossible to fully control the contrasting density of GOHONDE, so that GOHONDE is a little different in each work.
This Yunomi teacup brings the cheerful feeling of walking through autumn leaves. The bright gorgeous colored MOMIJI and GOHONDE techniques create a warm atmosphere yet also evoke the brisk autumn air in Japan. It will certainly add joy to your green moment.
