Made by Eizan Okuda
SHIGARAKI KAKEAWASE KITTATE Yunomi are very unique and sophisticated. The flow of the white and brown glaze creates beautiful gradation. You will be infatuated with the well-balanced form and design.
These Yunomi are made in the kiln of Shigaraki, which are one of the six major old Japanese kilns. The white glaze is SHIRAHAGI and the brown glaze is BEKKOU. BEKKOU means tortoiseshell in Japanese. The amber color looks like tortoiseshell and that is why it is called BEKKOU glaze. It is also used for HIBACHI, brazier or fire box half-filled with burning charcoal. HIBACHI is one of the traditional heating devices and it was the main product of Shigaraki.
These Yunomi feature the expert glazing skills of Eizan Okuda. He leaves a space and applies SHIRAHAGI glaze first and then applies BEKKOU glaze. This glazing technique, known as KAKEAWASE, takes a lot of time and effort but when the two different glazes mix, a new color appears with beautiful gradation.
ROKUROME is the trace of fingers or the paddle that the craftsman uses during wheel-forming. It is a line that encircles each Yunomi. Glaze covers the ROKUROME and creates unique patterns. The harmony of ROKUROME and glaze captivates viewers.
The inside of these Yunomi features SHIRAHAGI glaze. The inside is white, so you can fully appreciate the color of your tea. Eizan Okuda is a great artisan and also a tea master. He is an expert in tea culture, so when he designs a Matcha bowl or Yunomi, he focuses not only on the appearance but also its functionality. When you use his work, you can feel his attention to detail.
KITTATE means conical shape in Japanese. This KITTATE form is simple yet easy to use. It is the typical shape of a traditional Yunomi teacup.
The form of these Yunomi is quite distinctive. The KOHDAI is sharply shaved from the base to the hip to create this sharp line. This straight line from the base to the hip tightens up the form. The slightly flared rim fits the mouth perfectly when drinking tea, and makes the experience quite enjoyable.
The hip is a little wide and the exquisitely curved line from the rim to the hip evokes a feeling of elegance and dignity. The form of the hip is not only visually appealing but also helps you to hold these Yunomi more easily.
The shape of the KOHDAI base is also unique. You can see it is spread out, which is called BACHIKOHDAI and also there is a notch known as WARIKOHDAI. He chose BACHIKOHDAI for the stability and balance.
The shape and glaze of SHIGARAKI KAKEAWASE KITTATE Yunomi are distinctive. Considering the artisan's effort, techniques, and sophisticated design, these unique Yunomi are worth much more than the price, which is surprisingly reasonable. Once you hold these Yunomi in your hands, you can see and feel all the elaborate details of the artisan's work. These Yunomi will bring tranquility and joy to your tea time and certainly expand your green moment.
