Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln
The style of this Matcha bowl is flat and open. The flat style was originally developed in order to choreograph coolness in the summer season in the Middle Ages before the advent of air conditioning. This flat style of Matcha bowl can be used not only for Matcha but is also ideal for serving traditional Japanese snacks and other foods as well. It will expand in application depending on your idea. Of course, it can be used not only in the summer season but throughout the year.
HANA of this name means flower and KESSHO means crystal in Japanese. This item is finished by the technique called Crystal glaze. The technique is to mix certain metal substances into a clear glaze creating the pattern like crystal on the surface by a chemical reaction which occurs during the heating process in the kiln. This Crystal glaze pattern, like a field of blue flowers, is quite elegant, and the smooth glossy porcelain atmosphere is exquisite.
RURI is the Japanese name of lapis lazuli, and is one of the seven treasures in Buddhism. The RURI lapis lazuli blue glaze covers the inside and outside of the Matcha bowl, evoking the image that the Matcha bowl is adorned with lapis lazuli. Together, the rich blue color and the flat shape of this Matcha bowl bring a sensation of coolness. The harmony between the green color of Matcha and RURI blue color of this bowl is absolutely stunning.
To heat Crystal glaze porcelain, extremely delicate and sensitive temperature management in the kiln is required. In modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Needless to say, even in the same kiln, temperature is different by location. However, to produce a stable Crystal glaze porcelain, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, Crystal glaze porcelain has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create. Tohan Kiln has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate kiln, glaze, and so on for generations, and the continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful Crystal glaze porcelain at a reasonable price.
The bottom of the base is carefully carved in a spiral. It is one of the traditional garnishes of Matcha bowls, and also plays a role to bring a sophisticated atmosphere. It is one of several locations on the Matcha bowl where the artisan is able to express his identity.
Tohan's artistic vision of elegant blue flowers will certainly capture your heart.
