Tohan Kiln’s unique works, sustained by high level pottery and drawing techniques and various original elegant color glazes in more than 300 colors, are highly appreciated and viewed with awe.

HANA TSUDOI means flower gathering in Japanese. There are twelve tea cups in this series, and different flowers from season to season are decorated in each cup. HANA TSUDOI tea cup is one of the most popular in the advanced line at Tohan Kiln.

(SAKURA)
SAKURA means cherry blossoms in Japanese, and it is one of the best loved flowers of Japan. Tohan gorgeously expresses the elegant scene of SAKURA cherry blossoms.

Wide variety of expressions of cherry blossoms, from emerging to full bloom, are painted on this Yunomi brilliantly and sophisticatedly. Especially, gradation of pink color and the golden color which is used on the petal contours make SAKURA cherry blossoms more attractive. The deep pink color of cherry blossoms arranged in the center of the flower gradually turns to white toward the edge of the petals. This way of painting realistically expresses the characteristics of cherry blossoms.

The inside and outside of this Yunomi are glazed white and finished with brush lines, which create a fine atmosphere. One can see the natural color of the clay at the rim and base, which modestly accents the beautiful white glaze. Pottery wheel marks on the outside not only create a sense of rhythm but also make the tea cup convenient to hold in ones hands without slipping.

(TESSEN)
TESSEN means clematis in Japanese. This flower is used in seasonal arrangements for the tea ceremony. Tohan gorgeously expresses the elegant scene of TESSEN clematis. The flowers are painted elegantly, vividly, and intrepidly.
The form is uniquely beautiful. The curve from rim to bottom is quite elegant and graceful. The upper side is finished slimly. This cup is suitable not only to enjoy the subtle flavor of high quality Japanese tea, but also to enjoy various dishes and drinks, such as stick-cut vegetables, beer, wine, Japanese SAKE and so on. It completely depends on you, and you are limited only by your imagination.

Purple and light blue color of TESSEN clematis is beautifully reflected on the white glaze color tea cup elegantly and calmly. Clematis colored in purple is elegantly painted in a range of tones of a single color. Clematis colored in light blue elegantly blooms in the center of the Yunomi, and the strong blue color is decorated on the petals’ end and around the stamen to express the delicate color of the flower. Not only the reflection on the white glaze but also the contrast between purple and light blue clematis also capture the impressive beauty of the clematis flower.

The flowers and white glaze on each cup bring a warm atmosphere. We are certain that this Yunomi will enrich your green tea moment.

Tohan Dobuchi

Mr. Tohan Dobuchi was born in 1980 and is the fourth Tohan. The first Tohan Dobuchi opened Tohan Kiln in 1922. The current Tohan Dobuchi succeeded the fourth in 2011. Tohan Kiln's unique works, sustained by high level pottery and drawing techniques and various original elegant glazes in over three hundred colors, are highly appreciated and viewed with awe.
The third Tohan's art was full of creative energy, as he was naturally inquisitive and enjoyed exploring new techniques and designs every day. He studied glaze in Germany, so his works stood out from other Kyo Yaki. In the works of Tohan, they are incorporated with designs of flowering grasses that are found in nature. The third Tohan developed Tohan’s original world of glaze, color and design.
The fourth Tohan has been developing new styles like HANA KESSHO crystal glaze lines. And these days, Tohan Kiln also creates beautiful lamps, tables and other interior designs. Works receive a high evaluation from not only those within the field of ceramics but also from interior designers and furniture designers in Japan and around the world.
