Traditional Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Yoshinobu Kawashima in Kohzoh Kiln
This Yunomi has a strong yet tender atmosphere. White based earthenware is covered with black clay and coated with white glaze. Petals of cherry blossoms, maple and ginkgo leaves flutter on the white glaze. Elaborate work evokes a strong yet soft atmosphere and attracts our attention.
SHINO of this name means the place where this teacup originated, and SHUNJYU means spring and autumn in Japanese. Cherry blossoms, maple and ginkgo leaves which are representative flowers and plants in Japan are decorated on the SHINO earthenware. White color earthenware is covered with engobe, which is black clay. The design of petals and leaves are curved with a delicate touch. White glaze, which is called SHINO, is applied by brush with a soft touch. Shades of white glaze, applied by brush, create a dreamy atmosphere, as if we are about to touch the flowers and leaves, but cannot, though we reach out our hand.
Earthenware in SHINO was developed 400 years ago, and its technique, especially the glazing is superb. The color is strong white, and the thick glaze and KANNYU cracked surface creates the WABI SABI atmosphere.
Many of the processes used by the artisan to create this teacup require much time and effort. The techniques of carving the design of flowers and leaves, its glazing and KANNYU, are all merged into one graceful teacup. To consider the quality of this work, it is available at a reasonable price. We are sure that you will enjoy drinking Japanese tea in this elaborate cup.
