KI FUKUROH means yellow owl in Japanese. The charming FUKUROH owl shows her sweet face as she peeks over the cup rim. The form is finely rounded, and beautiful pastel-colored flowers and butterfly are gently designed on the surface. The refined olive color is vividly painted without any brush unevenness, which requires great skill. Watching KI-FUKUROH makes you feel happy and relaxed!

This Yunomi is created by the traditional technique known as KOHCHI. KOHCHI technique, much-prized in tea ceremony, is to edge each pattern, placing a fine border of clay around each design. This limits the flowing of glaze or pigment and allows the artisan to create a graceful, vivid pattern. There is no brush unevenness and the surface is smooth and glossy like stained glass, which is the most desirable characteristic of the KOHCHI technique.

The beautiful pastel-colored flowers and butterfly designed on the surface, and the refined and soft olive color is vividly and uniformly painted on this cup. The contrast of color is so beautiful, and the hue is so fresh and light, that you will feel immersed in the placid and tranquil forest and green fields.

The sweet owl sitting on the branch peeks over the cup rim. Every time you sip tea, your eyes will meet hers. Not to mention the owl is so cute, it is said that FUKUROH, which means owl, is a symbol of happiness and wellbeing in Japan. FU means nothing and KUROH means trouble or suffering. Moreover, FUKU means fortune, so FUKUROH denotes bliss or good luck. In addition, FUKUROH owl is said to be the god of wisdom and a symbol of economic fortune since ancient times. It is a sincere wish that happiness may come to you.

The form is gracefully rounded. It has a large capacity and unique atmosphere. The base is carefully scraped away and finished with a traditional method found only among the highest quality porcelain.

Shohoh Itoh

Shohoh Itoh was born in Kyoto in 1959. He worked under the former Shohoh for over 10 years. He succeeded the former and took over the Shohoh Kiln as the second generation in 1989. He creates high grade Kyo Yaki porcelain having delicate atmosphere in a wide range of table ware. His goal is to build upon tradition with his own unique techniques. His works have achieved wide acclaim, especially his sophisticated KOHCHI ware.
