Traditional Kyo-Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln

Star-shaped crystals that shimmer with iridescent hues are a naturally occurring crystallization that happens when the glaze cools down. Rainbow color peeks out from each star, which is what KOHSAI refers to. The stars are surrounded by small golden crystals that were not crystallized enough to become stars. It reminds us of a night sky in nature, where the light from the stars is not obscured by artificial lights in the city, and you realize how many unknown small stars exist beside the big planets.

SEKYOH means red obsidian. It indicates that this glaze has a shine that almost looks like obsidian. The special glaze is mixed into the red glaze in a skillful way to get the best star-shaped crystallization. The stars float against a reddish-brown background, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

The shape is a traditional form used for TENMOKU Chawan or white porcelain Chawan. The shape matches with the elegant crystal glaze very well. For the KOHDAI, the base of the bowl, the artisan left the raw material exposed. The snow-white KOHDAI somehow softens the scenery while tightening the overall design, as if holding a sky full of stars together.

To heat Crystal glaze porcelain, extremely delicate and sensitive temperature management in the kiln is required. In the modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in the kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Needless to say, even in the same kiln, the temperature is different by location. However, to produce a stable Crystal glaze porcelain, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, Crystal glaze porcelain has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create. Tohan Kiln has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate new kiln and glaze techniques for generations, and the continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful Crystal glaze porcelain at a reasonable price.

This Matcha bowl will deepen your green tea moment not only in the autumn season, but also throughout the year. Experience the world of Tohan, which is widely acclaimed across many fields.

Specially packaged in a carton box.

(Please note that SEISAN crystal glaze pattern is a little different in each work because of the features of the glaze.)
