KIBUCHI ORIBE (handcrafted Matcha Bowl)

This is limited edition only available in autumn and winter season.

diameter: 4.72inch (12cm) height: 3.07inch (7.8cm), standard matcha bowl size
Traditional Kyo-Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Jyunji Hayashi at Rinzan Klin

This piece was crafted using a green glaze known as RYOKU YU to replicate ROKUSHO IRO, the patina on the surface of bronze, which is produced by oxidation over a long period. It symbolizes the fresh, sprouting young leaves and a profound appreciation of nature. The deep, elegant hues of the patina green contrast beautifully against the sand-colored background.

The hand-applied glaze transforms in the kiln, revealing a rich variety of expressions that exceed the artisan’s own expectations. As a result of this process, the flow of the RYOKU YU glaze across the rim is unique to each piece and no two are ever the same. The brightness of the finish and its delicate transition into the background creates a unique character exclusive to your individual bowl.

In the world of Japanese pottery, these unique variations are admired as KESHIKI (the "scenery" of the vessel) - a key feature for appreciation. This particular piece evokes a serene shoreline where lush coastal greenery meets the breaking foam of the waves - a fine balance of majesty and fleeting beauty.

The bowl features a gentle, organic shape that is comfortable to hold and subtly changes the appearance of the KESHIKI from different angles, inviting quiet contemplation with every sip. A well-rounded base gives the bowl a substantial, grounded presence, yet its gentle curves bring a refreshing, almost playful softness to its organic form.

As you prepare and savor your matcha, the unique scenery found on this bowl will bring you a profound moment of stillness and peace. The individual character of this handcrafted Japanese pottery will connect you deeply to the timeless artistry of its craftsmanship with every use.

Jyunji Hayashi

Jyunji Hayashi was born in 1970, and started his pottery career in 1996. Rinzan kiln was established in Gojozaka and moved to Sumiyama in 1971. Jyunji Hayashi studied the ceramic glazes left behind by his father, Hachiro Hayashi, and used this knowledge, combined with new techniques, to develop his own glazes. Now Jyunji Hayashi makes pottery with his wife, Naoko Hayashi. They seek to create ceramics which give a sense of warmth, and are pleasing both visually and to the touch, using glazes, painting, and scratched finishes.
