[Limited] KURO IWANAMI - HIRAGATA (handcrafted Matcha bowl) Reviews

Author Eric Engel   (United States)
Review u (which is admittedly often), I pick up this tea bowl, hold it in both hands, and trace my fingers across its faceted and textured surface. It provides itself as a place to center one’s attention, and exudes a sense of calm, comfort, and stability in unstable times. It has a reassuring weight and sturdiness to it without feeling bulky. The tiny bumps and pockmarks across the surface contrast with the larger smooth undulating pattern carver into the outside of the bowl. When filled with hot or boiling tea, the clay radiates just enough heat to your hands to feel pleasantly warm, while letting the tea cool down quickly. The surface of the bowl visually resembles the surface of the moon, particularly on the inner side. If held in the light, you can see a subtle spiral pattern swirl down to the center at the bottom. Master Sako rejects the symmetry, smoothness, and regularity that is prevalent in much of our modern designs, and invites you to cherish its intentionally warped, rough, and imperfect qualities. It feels bold, yet also reserved, confident, but not haughty or arrogant. I am certain that it will outlast me by many decades if taken care of properly. Thank you, Hibiki-an, for offering such unique pieces like this one! It is rare to find Suzu-Yaki pottery even mentioned, let alone available to customers outside of Japan, so I am grateful for the chance to acquire this piece to add to my teaware collection.
