Review My winters in Southern California are mild, without the drama of fall leaves, patient bare trees, or snow – so I was attracted to the earthy darkness of this bowl as a reminder, in spite of palm trees and sun, of winter’s true nature of hibernating and storing up of energy. I am writing to say I got wonderfully more than I expected. During the past weeks, this bowl has been revealing all the gifts of master potter Eizan Okuda. The Irabo “roughness” seems a very gentle suggestion of the raw challenge of earth. The deep red-brown color with its faint greenish variance has been whispering the story of winter earth nurturing warm vitality in its darkness, with the faint green promise of life to come in Spring. And the small bits of shiny black glaze revealed in the bottom of the bowl when I've drained the frothy delicious matcha remind me of the lava I have seen in Hawai’i where the volcano is creating new land. This lovely Higan-no-Mai bowl has become an unexpected playful meditative support each morning on the renewing dance (Mai) of life. At first I hesitated to buy, wondering if the dark color I saw in the photos would be too strong, perhaps a little depressing on a grey winter day…but no…it is the embodiment of an inspiring light. Very happy to have it. Thank you for making it available.
