Yamanaka Nuri (Yamanaka Lacquerware)
Made by Creative Fine Art Lacquerware, Nishimoto

This wooden lacquered Matcha bowl is a masterwork of Yamanaka lacquerware, made from domestic Japanese zelkova. Combining time-honored woodworking heritage with thoughtful modern utility, this vessel is finished using the FUKI-URUSHI technique known as AKA-SURI.

AKA-SURI is distinguished by its luminous red finish through which the natural wood grain and subtle texture remain beautifully visible beneath the surface. This effect is achieved through the traditional FUKI-URUSHI (wiped lacquer) technique, where layers of lacquer are repeatedly applied and carefully wiped away.

AKA refers to the red color, yet it is far more than a single flat color. As the red lacquer seeps into the wood’s natural grain, it creates a finish rich in depth, dimension, and organic character that is alive with texture and warmth.

RAKU GATA refers to how this work is crafted to mirror the traditional techniques and shapes of classic Raku Yaki ware. It faithfully reproduces a solid, reassuring shape with a sense of warmth, while its comfortable depth and gentle curvature make it easy to whisk the tea. Designed for daily mindfulness rather than a fast-paced tea gathering, the wooden construction serves as an effective natural insulator that keeps Matcha warm without transferring excessive heat to your hands.

Although the bowl is made to be lightweight, the rim has a comfortable thickness with a soft, rounded edge that is pleasant to drink from. Remarkably light yet resilient against accidental drops or cracks, the bowl grows even more captivating over time, developing a deeper luster and richer tone through years of cherished use.

As you prepare and savor your Matcha, the unique scenery found on this bowl will bring you a profound moment of stillness and peace. The individual character of this wooden bowl will connect you deeply to the timeless artistry of its craftsmanship with every use.

Creative Fine Art Lacquerware, Nishimoto

Nishimoto was established in December 2009. Guided by the motto “Creating happiness between people through our lacquerware,” we continue to craft tea ceremony utensils and art objects that only they can create, while also focusing on “lacquerware that blends seamlessly into everyday life.” Their small team of highly skilled artisans specializes in creating Yamanaka-nuri, a traditional craft centered on tea ceremony utensils. They aim to offer everyday items—such as favorite pieces that you can cherish and use for years—that provide moments of respite in your daily life, rather than disposable items.

- For stains that cannot be removed by dry wiping, gently wash with a soft sponge and a mild dish detergent, then wipe dry.
- Do not use abrasive cleansers, scouring pads, or brushes with stiff bristles.

- Avoid soaking for long periods, as this may cause cracking or warping.
