This pottery Matcha bowl creates an aura of elegance and nobility. This Matcha bowl is part of a new line of TENMOKU tea ware from Tohan Kiln.
The shape is one of the traditional forms, which is used for TENMOKU Chawan. The shape matches with the elegant glaze very well.
SEI of this name means blue and SAN means hailstone in Japanese. This glaze is one kind of YUTEKI oil droplet glaze. And it is also one kind of TENMOKU glaze.
TENMOKU is an iron glaze traditionally known for its impenetrable and elusive nature. In ancient times, it was said that if an artisan tried to pursue YUTEKI glaze or TENMOKU glaze, they would become insolvent. It was developed 800 years ago, and many artisans pursed its technique, but few were successful. Because YUTEKI glaze or TENMOKU glaze was so difficult to create, it was a great honor for tea masters to acquire such precious earthenware at that time.
To heat this SEISAN blue oil droplet glaze pottery, extremely delicate and sensitive glaze compounding and temperature management in the kiln are required.
In glaze compounding, hundreds of recipes, which just slightly differ, were tried. The process required an extreme amount of time and effort.
In the modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in the kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Needless to say, even in the same kiln, the temperature is different by location. However, to produce a stable SEISAN blue oil droplet glaze, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, SEISAN blue oil droplet glaze has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create. Tohan Kiln has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate the kiln, glaze, and so on for generations, and the continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful SEISAN blue oil droplet glaze at a reasonable price.
As a result, this SEISAN blue oil droplet glaze is quite beautiful, elegant and dignified.
This unique shape is one of the traditional forms called TENMOKU Chawan. A part of the rim is uniquely hollowed in a horizontal form in the traditional TENMOKU Chawan. In addition to this, the technique called TSUCHIMISE, which means “show soil” in Japanese, is used for the bottom of TENMOKU style.
