Traditional Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Kohgiku Yamaoka in Kohgiku Kiln

This Matcha bowl is a flat and open style. The flat style was originally developed in order to choreograph coolness in the summer season in the Middle Ages before the advent of air conditioning. This flat style of Matcha bowl can be used not only for Matcha but is also ideal for serving traditional Japanese snacks and other foods as well.

RYUSUI AOKAEDE means running water and green maple. This Matcha bowl is perfect for summer, depicting green and blue maple leaves flowing over a delicately painted river or stream in gold and gentle blue. The different colors of the leaves, which range from blue to green, emphasize the perspective and give the simple motif a more expansive appearance. The branches and veins of the leaves are carefully painted in gold over the maple leaves, which feature the gentle colors of Japanese paints. Gold is also used for the cool river current, which requires a special painting technique that is more difficult than it appears.

The patches of orange, created by the traditional glazing technique known as GOHONDE, are just like the sun. Found on the surface of the inside or outside, GOHONDE adds warmth to the atmosphere of the work. It is impossible to fully control the contrasting density of GOHONDE, so GOHONDE is quite different in each work.

This style of Matcha bowl was developed to inspire a sense of coolness during the hot summer months, like a refreshing cool breeze. Upon first use, you will surprisingly feel the coolness and exhilaration. We are certain that you will enjoy not only drinking Matcha but also serving Japanese snacks with this bowl. Of course, it can be used not only in the summer season but throughout the year!
