Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln

YUGEN refers to experiencing an immeasurable depth of emotion, and SAKURA are Japanese cherry blossoms. This teacup features an elegant cherry blossom design, which is one of the specialties of the artist Mr. Tohan Dobuchi. This teacup is called KOMURASAKI, which means vivid, deep purple color. The entire teacup is this lovely deep purple color that expresses the gorgeousness and fragility of Japanese cherry blossoms. The KOMURASAKI teacup has a generous, rounded appearance. It is quite comfortable, pleasant and lovely to hold in your hands.

SAKURA cherry blossoms are one of the best loved flowers of Japan. Tohan gorgeously expresses the elegant scene of SAKURA cherry blossoms. The flowers are painted elegantly, vividly, and intrepidly. SAKURA cherry blossoms are not only a symbol of spring but are also the national flower of Japan.

The KOMURASAKI teacup artfully expresses the transient beauty of cherry blossoms, whose petals will fall off in just a few days. This awareness of impermanence or the ephemeral nature of beauty is a traditional Japanese sentiment. Tohan has beautifully captured this sentiment in his painting of the cherry blossoms. The cherry blossoms framed in gold are quite elegant.

A few cherry blossom branches are also painted on the inside of the teacup. It seems as if the cherry blossom branches painted on the surface have grown to the inside. When you pour green tea in this teacup, you will feel as if you are enjoying a cup of tea at an outdoor tea ceremony while looking at the lovely cherry blossoms.

The white glaze covering the entire surface of the teacup is called MURAGAKE, which is used to create a unique atmosphere. MURAGAKE adds an uneven texture to the surface of the teacup.

The reddish-brown color of the coarse clay KOHDAI, the base of the teacup, adds a discreet accent to the graceful and sophisticated aura.

Once you pour green tea into this white teacup, the color contrast between the green tea and cherry blossom colors is perfectly harmonized. You are sure to fall in love with this fine Kyo-Yaki teacup featuring the beauty of Japanese cherry blossoms in spring.

Tohan Dobuchi

Mr. Tohan Dobuchi was born in 1980 and is the fourth Tohan. The first Tohan Dobuchi opened Tohan Kiln in 1922. The current Tohan Dobuchi succeeded the fourth in 2011. Tohan Kiln's unique works, sustained by high level pottery and drawing techniques and various original elegant glazes in over three hundred colors, are highly appreciated and viewed with awe.
The third Tohan's art was full of creative energy, as he was naturally inquisitive and enjoyed exploring new techniques and designs every day. He studied glaze in Germany, so his works stood out from other Kyo Yaki. In the works of Tohan, they are incorporated with designs of flowering grasses that are found in nature. The third Tohan developed Tohan’s original world of glaze, color and design.
The fourth Tohan has been developing new styles like HANA KESSHO crystal glaze lines. And these days, Tohan Kiln also creates beautiful lamps, tables and other interior designs. Works receive a high evaluation from not only those within the field of ceramics but also from interior designers and furniture designers in Japan and around the world.
