WASANBON CHIDORI is a type of OHIGASHI, which is among the most traditional WAGASHI Japanese confections, often served during the Japanese tea ceremony and cherished for its sweet and colorful appearance. WASANBON CHIDORI is made with the highest quality WASANBON sugar, and pairs perfectly with Japanese green tea.

WASANBON is made in Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures in southwest Japan. The sugar is made from thin sugarcane plants called Taketo, grown especially in these areas and made locally using traditional methods. WASANBON is known for its high-toned sweetness.

CHIDORI is a general term for little birds that gather in the river, and it has long been the subject of song lyrics and poetry in Japan since ancient times. Traditional Japanese KIMONO sometimes feature a CHIDORI pattern.

Our WASANBON CHIDORI are handmade by Ponto-cho SURUGAYA located on the Ponto-cho traditional street, a scenic spot in Kyoto and it has been in business for 120 years. Ponto-cho is also famous as a HANAMACHI town with MAIKO and GEISHA. The CHIDORI pattern is used as the family crest of Ponto-cho, which comes from the fact that it faces the Kamo River where many little CHIDORI birds gather. Ponto-cho SURUGAYA is well known as a confectioner who makes traditional WAGASHI Japanese confections by hand with careful attention to quality and detail.

Just a little water is added to WASANBON. It is mixed well and strained in order to be fine. Pink, blue, purple and yellow colors are added using natural food coloring. The mixture is then shaped by pretty Japanese traditional wooden molds which are handcrafted. Ponto-cho SURUGAYA has a few hundred kinds of wooden molds and uses them differently in each season. Then the confection is dried and finished. All processes are completed by hand.

Enjoy our WASANBON CHIDORI with Japanese green tea and feel the traditional HANAMACHI atmosphere of the ancient city of Kyoto.
