HANA OHIGASHI are petite confections, shaped like hemispheres, in three elegant flavors and colors: green for Matcha, beige for Houjicha and pink for plain. Each subtly sweet and mild flavor pairs perfectly with all types of Japanese green tea. We have no doubt that you will enjoy your relaxing tea time more than ever when you taste HANA OHIGASHI.
HANA means flower in Japanese. These lovely confections are named HANA to represent the variety of OHIGASHI as flowers blooming in abundance. When you taste HANA OHIGASHI, you feel as if you are in a field of flowers.
OHIGASHI are among the most traditional WAGASHI Japanese confections, which are often served at Japanese tea ceremony, and pair perfectly with Japanese green tea. OHIGASHI are made with the highest quality WASANBON sugar, and are cherished for their sweet and colorful appearance.
WASANBON is made in Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures in southwest Japan. The sugar is made from thin sugarcane plants called Taketo, grown especially in these areas and made locally using traditional methods. WASANBON is known for its high-toned sweetness.
Our HANA OHIGASHI are handmade by TSUBONEYA located in the Kiyomizu temple neighborhood, a scenic spot in Kyoto. TSUBONEYA is well known as a confectioner who makes traditional WAGASHI Japanese confections by hand with careful attention to quality and detail.
Just a little water is added to WASANBON. It is mixed well and strained in order to be fine. Green, pink, and beige colors are added using natural food coloring. Matcha and Houjicha are each kneaded into the mixture. The mixture is then shaped by pretty Japanese traditional wooden molds which are handcrafted. TSUBONEYA has a few hundred kinds of wooden molds and uses them differently in each season. Then the confection is dried and finished. All processes are completed by hand.
