Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln

HANA of this name means flower and KESSHO means crystal in Japanese. This porcelain Yunomi creates a pleasant, cooling sensation. It is said that it is very difficult for porcelain or earthenware to create a cooling sensation.

This item is finished by the technique called Crystal glaze. The technique is to mix certain metal substances into a clear glaze creating the pattern like crystal on the surface by a chemical reaction which occurs during the heating process in the kiln. The Crystal glaze pattern, which looks like a field of flowers, is quite elegant, and the smooth glossy porcelain atmosphere is exquisite.

This Yunomi has a unique form, called TAMA YUNOMI. TAMA means ball in Japanese. TAMA YUNOMI is a tradition at Tohan Kiln. You may think this Yunomi is not easy to use to drink green tea, but once you try this Yunomi, you'll know it is really quite comfortable, pleasant and lovely to hold in your hands.

To heat Crystal glaze porcelain, extremely delicate and sensitive temperature management in the kiln is required. In modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Needless to say, even in the same kiln, temperature is different by location. However, to produce a stable Crystal glaze porcelain, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, Crystal glaze porcelain has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create.
Tohan Dobuchi has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate kiln, glaze, and so on for decades. His continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful Crystal glaze porcelain at a reasonable price.

The pale brown and green color of crystal glaze flowers elegantly inside and outside the cup.

HANA KESSHO TAMA YUNOMI has a uniquely pleasant, cooling sensation. The sensation is brought by the soothing crystal glaze pattern and smooth glossy porcelain. This is a special opportunity to experience the world of Tohan, which is highly acclaimed.
