This Matcha bowl is refined and elaborate work. Beautiful and dynamic HYOHTAN Japanese calabashes, colored in gold, are carefully and boldly drawn on the surface of this bowl. The brilliant Japanese auspicious objects accentuate the splendor of the HYOHTAN Japanese calabashes and the Matcha bowl. Some portions colored in gold add elegance and luxury to this Matcha bowl. The gentle and refined white surface of this bowl also emphasizes its elegant impression.

MUBYOH means six pieces of HYOHTAN Japanese calabashes. It is an auspicious motif expressing a state of perfect health since MU means nothing and BYOH means illness, in Japanese. Indeed, it was traditionally used on banners by feudal warlords. Six pieces of calabashes are joyfully and exquisitely decorated on this Matcha bowl.

The calabashes are elegantly and colorfully adorned with Japanese auspicious flowers and objects. For example, SHOHCHIKUBAI is drawn on the HYOHTAN calabashes. SHOHCHIKUBAI means MATSU, TAKE and UME in Japanese. MATSU pine tree and TAKE bamboo symbolize good health since the pine tree needles and TAKE bamboo are green year-round. UME plum, which is the symbol of nobleness and longevity in Japan, is also one of the auspicious objects, because the lively UME plum tree vigorously blooms in the early cold spring, earlier than other flowers.

This decorative painting is not only beautiful but also complex and time-consuming to create. Actually, it was fired three times in order to complete the picture. For instance, the red and white pattern called SHIPPOH GARA, which is also regarded as auspicious, is drawn in three stages. At first, the HYOHTAN Japanese calabashes and inside pattern are framed in gold and then, it is colored in red and white. Finally, the golden pattern is drawn on the red portions. Needless to say, skilled technique and copious knowledge are required to draw such a delicate picture.

The technique called GOHONDE, colorful lines of orange, is seen on the inside and outside of this bowl. It is impossible to fully control the contrasting density of GOHONDE, so that GOHONDE is a little different in each work. The refined white color of this bowl and GOHONDE colorful rings add balance and warmth to the atmosphere and emphasize the beauty of this bowl.

This work features KANNYU, a type of glaze and technique which gives the appearance of a cracked surface. The KANNYU pattern faintly appears over the whole surface of this bowl, which deepens the warm atmosphere.

The foot of this Matcha bowl is carefully and elaborately scraped away, which is proof of the highest grade Matcha bowl.

This bowl featuring auspicious HYOHTAN Japanese calabashes is sure to bring elegance and grace to your green moment. This Matcha bowl will also bring good fortune to you!
