RINPA is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting, which flourished in the 17th century in Kyoto. "RIN" means the beautiful beads, and "PA" means school, so all works in RINPA are focusing on colorful and elegant expression. RINPA is also known as one of the arts which express more unique Japanese sensitivity in Japanese modern art.

We, Hibiki-an have collaborated with Zenshoh Yamaoka, who is the leading expert of paintings derived from masterpieces in the middle ages and acclaimed Kyo Yaki artisan, to release a series of tea cups featuring RINPA paintings. Zenshoh Yamaoka chose KAKITSUBATA ZU. Each painting is well decorated by his unique sense.

Kohrin Ogata (1658 - 1716) was born into a family of KIMONO fabric dealers in Kyoto. He was influenced by the beauty of lacquers and pottery made by Kouetsu Honami, and by the paintings of Soutatu Tawaraya, especially his unique composition and brush strokes. Kohrin Ogata learned how to paint by replicating the works of these master artisans.

KAKITSUBATA means iris in Japanese. The contrast between the green color of the iris leaves and the navy and light blue colors of the iris petals creates a fresh atmosphere. The golden glaze coats outside the teacup, and it is close to the original color of the BYOBU folding screen. Even though only three colors are used on this teacup, the beauty of the flower and the simple yet graceful colors are quite impressive.

KAKITSUBATA iris flower was painted by many artists in the RINPA School. Even though only navy and green colors are used to paint the iris, the flower itself is very colorful and graceful. The green color of the veins and grasses adds its noble character much more. Not only the color but also each line are elaborately described, and the delicate atmosphere of iris flowers is well expressed by hand.

The use of golden color has a deep effect. The golden glaze coats outside the Yunomi teacup, and this color creates a mature atmosphere on the teacup. Its color is not loud but soft, so that the golden color deepens the graceful atmosphere of the irises, which are colored in navy and green.

One of the focal points on this teacup is its flower arrangement. Based on Kohrin’s design, a cluster of iris flowers are arranged on the teacup, and decorated in a light and limpid touch. The decoration technique creates a rhythm to the iris flowers, and the well balanced flower arrangement emphasizes its depth on the teacup.

This Yunomi is a very simple design, but its simplicity of design, color, and flower arrangement on the teacup creates an elegant and graceful atmosphere. Would you enjoy a taste of the aesthetic world of RINPA with our Japanese green tea?
