SANSHO Japanese Pepper ARARE (handmade rice cracker)

This is limited edition only available in autumn season.

Interior Content: 80g (2.82oz)

ARARE is a rice cracker made from glutinous rice, named because its shape resembles the hail that falls from the sky in winter, which is called “ARARE” in Japanese. It is one of the most common snacks in Japan to enjoy with a cup of green tea.

ARARE is one of Japan’s most beloved traditional rice crackers and has been enjoyed for centuries. It pairs perfectly with Sencha, Genmaicha, and Houjicha as well as Matcha, making it an ideal accompaniment to Japanese green tea. Unlike SENBEI, which is made from non-glutinous rice, ARARE is made from glutinous rice (MOCHI rice), giving it a lighter, crispier texture.

This premium ARARE is generously seasoned with stone-ground ASAKURA SANSHO pepper, a prized Japanese pepper renowned for its refreshing citrus-like aroma and pleasantly tingling spiciness. The result is a distinctive flavor unlike any other. The vibrant heat of the SANSHO pepper, the specially blended soy sauce seasoning, and the carefully crafted texture and roasting of the rice crackers come together in perfect harmony, creating a well-balanced and unforgettable taste experience.

This SANSHO Japanese pepper ARARE is handmade by FUJISAWA EISHOHDO in Kyoto. Renowned for preserving traditional production methods, FUJISAWA EISHOHDO is dedicated to using high-quality natural ingredients. The third-generation owner continues to devote the time and care required to produce handmade ARARE using time-honored techniques while striving to offer authentic craftsmanship at a reasonable price. Another important principle is to bring out the natural flavor of the ingredients without relying on chemical seasonings (such as monosodium glutamate) or artificial colorings (such as caramel coloring).

Traditionally, ARARE begins with freshly prepared MOCHI, which is then carefully dried and roasted. In contrast, many modern factories use glutinous rice flour instead of making MOCHI from scratch to reduce production time and cost. Unfortunately, this shortcut often diminishes the natural flavor of the rice, making stronger seasonings and additives necessary to compensate.

This SANSHO Japanese pepper ARARE is made primarily from Japanese glutinous rice and seasoned only with Matcha and sugar. Each piece is handcrafted using the traditional method described above. The roasting process is particularly demanding, as it is greatly affected by seasonal and weather conditions. Skilled craftsmen carefully monitor the crackers throughout the entire day, adjusting the roasting process to achieve the ideal texture and flavor.

With your very first bite, you'll experience the delightfully crisp texture of the ARARE, followed by the lively, tingling flavor of SANSHO Japanese pepper. Before you know it, the bag is empty. One bite is all it takes to discover the irresistible charm of this uniquely flavorful snack.
