Made by Keiji Funahara at Keiji Kiln

This Yunomi is adorned with some abstract flowers. Their lively expressions evoke a light, open feeling, like flowers moving freely across a spring field. It is an energetic work, full of movement, energy, and a strong sense of life.

MAI means dancing and HANA means flower. As the name implies, the flowers appear to dance across the center of the Yunomi. Although each flower is painted in a highly abstract style, skillful gradations give them a distinct presence. Every flower is painted darker toward the center and lighter toward the edges, creating a sense of depth and dynamic motion.

At the base of the cup, the glaze is applied in a beautiful triangular pattern. Along one edge of this triangle, flowers are dancing, bringing a balance and sense of order to the entire Yunomi. The carefully calculated design, down to the finest details, enhances the overall refinement and completeness of this Yunomi.

After shaping, this Yunomi is fired, during which GOHONDE naturally appears. GOHONDE refers to the soft speckled markings that emerge on the surface of the Yunomi. These markings can also be seen on the interior of the Yunomi, lending the entire piece a sense of warmth and depth. It is impossible to fully control the contrasting density of GOHONDE, so GOHONDE is quite different in each work. As a result, every work possesses its own unique character.

As winter gives way to spring, and flowers begin to bloom, this Yunomi is fitting for the season. Enjoying tea while sensing the dance of falling blossoms is sure to bring a gentle sense of vitality to your day.
