This Yunomi features beautiful SAKURA painted with such delicate detail, as though a fleeting moment of Japanese spring has been captured in time. Each time you hold the cup, you can feel the warmth of spring.
SHIROGAKE is a traditional technique in which white slip is applied over a dark clay body rich in iron content. It is also known as SHIROKESHOH. By creating a white surface, the technique allows painted designs to stand out with greater clarity and brilliance, enhancing the beauty and precision of the Yunomi.
SAKURA means cherry blossom and it is the symbol of spring in Japan. Upon this white surface, SAKURA are depicted in a realistic style. The white of the petals allows the base color to show through, while soft pink gradations are layered to create a lifelike expression. In addition, the stamens, pistils, and even the delicate edges of the petals are accented with gold, creating a refined sense of depth and dimension. The artist’s delicate craftsmanship certainly draws admiration from the viewer.
The inside and background outside are glazed white and finished with brush lines, which create a refined atmosphere. The soft white created by the HAKEME forms a beautiful contrast with the delicate pink of the SAKURA, enhancing their elegance and visual impact. In contrast, the rim and base are left with the natural color of the clay, emphasizing the beauty of the material itself. The clean hexagonal form at the base reminds us of KIKKOH GARA (the turtle shell pattern), a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japan. This adds depth, character, and a refined sense of charm to the Yunomi.
With its relatively large capacity, this SHIROGAKE SAKURA Yunomi is suitable not only for high-quality Japanese tea, but also for a variety of other drinks. It depends upon your vision and preference. Enjoy the warmth and beauty of springtime in Japan with this lovely Yunomi.
