CHABAKO (handcrafted container; capacity 300g)

handcrafted container, length(14cm), width(19cm), height: 4.33inch (14cm), capacity: 300g tea leaves Made with Cedar wood, Tin plate

CHABAKO is a cedar wood box that has been used since the late Edo period to store and transport tea leaves while keeping them fresh. The material typically comes from thinned cedar trees over 30 years old. After being exposed to the elements for at least two months and carefully dried underweight, only the most stable wood-resistant to warping and distortion-is selected.

CHABAKO production began when Japan started exporting tea during the Edo period. Today, only a handful of skilled craftsmen across Japan continue to handcraft these boxes one by one, preserving this traditional technique. To enhance its functionality, the interior is lined with tin plate for moisture- and insect-resistance. With its proven performance as a container for tea leaves, CHABAKO is highly regarded for its exceptional ability to protect against humidity, pests, and oxidation. Beyond storing tea, its superior qualities make it ideal for preserving a wide variety of items-from pasta and dry foods to medicines, clothing, cameras, and photographs.

In the past, tea leaves were placed directly inside the CHABAKO. Today, place the sealed tea bag inside the CHABAKO for optimal storage. If you choose to place tea leaves directly into the CHABAKO, we recommend storing only the amount you can use within two to three weeks.

Over the years, the color of the wood deepens beautifully. It is said that even after a hundred years, its form and function remain unchanged. CHABAKO is a timeless piece-meant to be cherished and passed down through generations.

Made in Japan.

Directions

-To protect the joints of the wooden boards and the seams between the box and the tin lining, washi paper is carefully applied at key points. This traditional reinforcement adds strength and durability to the CHABAKO. Because the washi is attached with a starch-based adhesive, it can peel off easily when exposed to water. For everyday care, please avoid getting the box wet and use a dry cloth or a well-wrung damp cloth to wipe the surface gently.
- The joints of the tin plate lining inside the CHABAKO are carefully soldered by hand, using tin and a soldering iron by skilled artisans.

Directions

- Avoid storing in the refrigerator, as excessive dryness may cause the bark to peel or the piece to warp.
- Do not soak in water or hot water, and do not wash in a dishwasher.
- This product is not suitable for use in microwaves or ovens.
- To prevent the bark from peeling, avoid exposure to water and do not store in damp environments.
- Keep away from direct sunlight, which may cause warping, cracks, or fading.
- Please avoid sudden temperature changes caused by hot or cold items, as this may result in discoloration, warping, or cracking.
