HYOUKA SENNOUGE Yunomi - pair (handcrafted Teacup)

TTeacup: pair: 200ml (6.76fl oz) each, diameter: 3.35inches (8.5cm) height: 2.17inches (5.5cm)

The glossy white porcelain of this cup is adorned with a carved motif as radiant as ice: the SENNOUGE flower. With its slender, finely detailed petals expressed in thin porcelain, the design evokes the delicate beauty of tea flowers (CHAKA).

The SENNOUGE, belonging to the Pink family, blooms from early summer to autumn. Originally brought from China, it has been cultivated at Sennoh Temple since the Muromachi period.

CHAKA embodies the WABI-SABI spirit of the tea ceremony. Sen No Rikyu once said, “Flowers should be arranged as they are in the field.” In this tradition, wildflowers of the season are placed simply in a modest vase, bringing subtle beauty and a sense of seasonality to the tearoom.

This cup captures that same quiet elegance. The floral motif is carved with restraint, reflecting the philosophy of simplicity and subtle charm. When filled, the translucent white porcelain allows light to pass through, letting the drink within softly glow with color.

Mino Yaki

Mino Yaki is said to have originated in the Nara period (710–794), when the potter’s wheel and the Anagama kiln were introduced from the Korean Peninsula along with the techniques for producing Sueki stoneware. In the Heian period (794–1185), the production of ash-glazed pottery began, and by the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573–1600), the flourishing tea ceremony culture gave rise to famous styles such as SHINO, KISETO (yellow SETO), ORIBE, and SETOGURO (black SETO).
