Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln
HANA of this name means flower and KESSHO means crystal in Japanese. This porcelain Yunomi creates an aura of unique pleasant cooling sensation. It is said that it is very difficult for porcelain or earthenware to create a cooling sensation.
This item is finished by the technique called crystal glaze. The technique is to mix certain metal substances into a clear glaze creating the pattern like crystal on the surface by a chemical reaction which occurs during the heating process in the kiln. Crystal glaze pattern like flower is quite elegant, and smooth glossy porcelain atmosphere is exquisite.
To heat crystal glaze porcelain, extremely delicate and sensitive temperature management in the kiln is required. In modern earthenware and porcelain industry, temperature management in the kiln is in 10C (18F) increments at best. Needless to say, even in the same kiln, temperature is different by location. However, to produce a stable crystal glaze porcelain, the temperature in the kiln must be controlled in 1C (1.8F) increments. So, crystal glaze porcelain has an extremely low yield ratio and can be quite expensive to create.
Tohan Dobuchi has continuously made efforts to improve or innovate kiln, glaze, and so on for decades. His continuous efforts have enabled the production of beautiful crystal glaze porcelain at a reasonable price.
The glaze color of AOZUMI, which means bluish black ink is well reflected on the black base porcelain. Deep blue color of crystal glaze flowers elegantly inside and outside the cup.
HANA KESSHO Yunomi teacup has an aura of profound sensation. The sensation is brought by the soothing crystal glaze pattern and smooth glossy porcelain. It is certain to bring not only a cooling green moment on hot summer days in Japan but also to enhance the elegant atmosphere in all seasons around the world.
