Handcrafted Multi-cup: pair, 180ml (6.34fl oz) each, diameter: 3.54inches (9.0cm) height: 2.76inches (7.0cm)
Sophisticated Kyo-Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Tohan Dobuchi at Tohan Kiln
This porcelain multi-cup creates an aura of elegance and opposite sensations of traditional WABI SABI and avant-garde. HANA KOHCHI line, composed with 12 colors and flowers of the Japanese four seasons, is a new line of Tohan Kiln.
This is large for a Yunomi teacup, and can be held with both hands. The teacup rim is beautifully flared open. Side of middle to bottom is somewhat slim and the base is shaped small. The sides are vertically scraped away, to create not only a sense of rhythm but also shading of glaze. Whole form is beautiful, despite the large size.
AYAME means iris in Japanese, a well-loved flower of late spring to early summer in Japan. It has been said, since ancient times, that iris fends off evil because of its strong fragrance.
TESSEN means clematis in Japanese, which is one of the seasonal flowers arranged for the tea ceremony. The purple color of TESSEN clematis is beautifully reflected on the white color teacup elegantly and calmly.
The flowers and plants are vividly painted by zaffer glaze in Tohan’s specific painting style, which always fascinates viewers.
Porcelain glazed by KOHCHI technique is usually uniform in color without variation which is the essential feature of traditional KOHCHI technique. However, Tohan creates the color variation with purpose. The harmony of the elegance of vividly painted flower and WABI SABI atmosphere created by the color variation of glaze is one area of expertise of Tohan kiln.
The size and form is suitable for use as a tea cup, whiskey glass, ice cream bowl, and so on. This cup is useful and well-designed.
