RINPA is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting, which flourished in the 17th century in Kyoto. "RIN" means the beautiful beads, and "PA" means school, so all works in RINPA are focusing on colorful and elegant expression. RINPA is also known as one of the arts which express more unique Japanese sensitivity in Japanese modern art.
We, Hibiki-an have collaborated with Zenshoh Yamaoka, who is the leading expert of paintings derived from masterpieces in the middle ages and acclaimed Kyo Yaki artisan, to release a series of Matcha bowls featuring RINPA paintings. Zenshoh Yamaoka chose SHIKI KACHOU ZU. Each painting is well decorated by his unique sense.
Houitsu Sakai (1761 - 1828), who was part of the third generation of RINPA, indurated RINPA in the Edo period. He is well known for his realistic description of birds, grasses and flowers, which he paints lively and elegantly. One of his most famous works is SHIKI KACHOU ZU, "Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons" in English. He painted the Japanese four seasons with representative flowers and birds. The well-balanced layout and clear coloring pattern attract our attention. It is often said that this work is the most valuable among all paintings of flowers and birds in the Middle Ages in Japan, because it truly creates an immersive visual experience for the viewer.

HARU of this name means spring, and NATSU means summer in Japanese. Zenshoh Yamaoka illustrates the Japanese scenery of a glorious spring and bracing summer with a refined touch and various colors. On the gold color of glazing, red and white plum flowers and yellow RENGYOU golden bell branches are in full bloom, expressing the warm atmosphere of spring. In contrast, blue, yellow, and white flowers bloom at the waterside, suggesting a feeling of cool and calm during the Japanese summer. Through painting the scenery of Japanese spring and summer, Zenshoh Yamaoka expresses not only the brilliance of two seasons in Japan but also the vitality of nature itself and the classic scenes representative of these seasons, as seen in daily life in Japan.
The scenery of spring is well described with the use of various kinds of color. UME plum tree and RENGYOU golden bell branches, which are Japanese representative flowers of spring, are in full bloom, and both trees express a mild and warm spring atmosphere. White plum flowers are in full bloom, and red and black buds are almost ready to blossom. The fresh yellow and light green colors of young leaves are representative of early spring. The flowers, branches and trunks are painted with a refined touch, creating a soft and fresh impression.
Japanese white-eye bird, known as MEJIRO, settles on the plum branch, which signifies the coming of spring. Seeing a Japanese MEJIRO bird is a joyful experience.
The use of golden color has a deep effect. Clouds are frequently used in Japanese traditional painting to separate and define space and time. The use of golden clouds makes this tea cup bright and luxurious. Adding to that, golden clouds create soft spring breeze, and golden bell branches flow with the gentle air.
The summer scenery is decorated with a delicate and refined touch. The flowers painted on this tea cup are water plants. White color of arrow head, yellow color of water lily and blue color of iris bloom along the waterside, suggesting a feeling of cool and calm during the Japanese summer. A light mist in navy blue surrounds the flowers, evoking the impression of water plants. To create the mist, the artist uses a special technique, which is quite difficult to accomplish. The golden color used to highlight the veins brings a luxurious atmosphere. BAN swamp chickens gather around the waterside in order to cool themselves, which is a classic scene representative of daily life during the summer season in Japan.
Japanese scenery of spring and summer are well described elegantly. Trees and birds with strong vitality welcome the coming of the seasons. These classic scenes are sure to enrich your green moment.
