Sophisticated Kyo Yaki (Kyoto Style)
Made by Kahoh Itoh at Kahoh Kiln
This Yunomi is well planned and designed though it looks quite simple at first glance. You will be impressed when you feel its thinness and light weight, which are marks of sophistication.
This glaze is called KAKI YU, meaning persimmon color glaze in Japanese. It is very difficult to extract this beautiful color of vermilion in a stable form. Even in Kyoto, only Kahoh Itoh can consistently create this color of glaze. Linear marks from the potter's wheel are outside the Yunomi to make graduations of color, which add a certain accent and rhythm.
Colorful patches of orange are called GOHONDE, a traditional technique that adds warmth to the atmosphere of the work. It is impossible to fully control the contrasting density of GOHONDE, so that GOHONDE is a little different in each work. Linear marks from the potter's wheel are outside the Yunomi. It moderately adds calm and accent to this simple Yunomi.
The form is fascinating though it looks quite simple at a glance. The teacup rim is flared, middle of side is a little full, and bottom is tucked. The curve from the rim to base is beautiful. The shape of the rim also helps to feel the flavor sharply. This Yunomi is finished much thinner and lighter than it looks. You will be impressed when you feel its lightness, which is a mark of sophistication. Dents are created vertically at middle to upper side. They not only add an accent but also help one to easily hold the Yunomi. The base is carved spirally, which is usually created on high grade Matcha Bowls.
As above, this Yunomi is well planned and designed though it looks quite simple at first glance. Its quality will certainly enrich your tea time.
