This Matcha Bowl is created only for Hibiki-an by up-and-coming artisan, Hozan Tanii. In contrast to the fact that all of his works are based on and sustained by various complex traditional techniques, they look sophisticated and modern. His style not only follows tradition but also fuels the spark of imagination, pursuing new heights.
This is the sister Matcha Bowl with HIBIKI. KYOHSOH of this name means coexistence, harmony, or symphony. The vision of artisan Hozan Tanii is for all natural life forms on earth to live together in harmony, and to enjoy the beauty of autumn together. The ceramic bowl is intended to look as though it has sprung naturally from the earth itself in autumn, formed from clay in the field, glaze and fire.
One of the most remarkable features is the glaze, which Hozan Tanii specially developed for these sister Matcha Bowls to evoke the rich and poignant beauty, and somewhat lonely atmosphere of autumn in Japan. The glaze is known as SHIGARAKI MOMIJI YU. MOMIJI means autumn red leaves, YU means glaze. SHIGARAKI MOMIJI YU is actually composed of three kinds of traditional Japanese glazes: TETSU AKA YU (meaning iron red glaze / chestnut color), TENMOKU YU (black color), and SOBA YU (holly green color). They are typically used independently. However, Mr. Tanii is able to use this trio of glazes expertly and they work beautifully with the natural clay. In fact, Mr. Tanii may be the only artisan who can bring together and engender the full expressive personality of these glazes.
The chestnut color TETSU AKA YU glaze faintly and subtly shines. It looks quite gentle. And parts just thinly coated by TETSU AKA YU glaze are matte black.
Shiny black parts are brought by TENMOKU YU glaze. It feels animated and vivid. The shiny black patterns are created in a counterclockwise fashion. It is because fire circulates counterclockwise in the kiln.
Holly green color brought by SOBA YU glaze looks calm. It inexplicably harmonizes the other glazes.
This form, called GOKI, is quite traditional, though not well known. Tall base, which is spread out at the bottom, creates an accent, a sense of tension, and delicacy, and tightens the form. The contrast of shapes of moderate gentle curve from middle to low side and base is subtle and beautiful.
The base is finished carefully and elegantly. And there is a projection at the center of the base, which is created by a traditional technique called Tokin Kabuto. Height of this Matcha Bowl's projection is more than usual, which is proof of the highest grade Matcha Bowl.
The rim is shaped like four or five mountains, which is a traditional technique called GOZAN. GOZAN means five mountains in Japanese.
The glaze flows down emphatically especially at middle to low side, accentuating the form. The contrast of flowing glaze, rough soil, and subtle form is quite unique and exquisite.
Mr. Tanii has said that each piece looks different and has a different personality, much the same as each person on this earth is special and unique in their own way. Each piece is infused with emotion. To consider the time and care taken to create, it is set at quite a reasonable price. This will deepen in atmosphere over time. Hozan’s world will certainly enrich your green moment.
