Handcrafted container, diameter: 2.95inch (7.5cm), height: 3.35inch (8.5cm), capacity: 50g tea leaves Traditional Yamanaka wood craft

Chazutsu is a container specially designed to keep your green tea fresh.
This wooden Chazutsu is crafted following Japanese tradition. The wood is from the Japanese mulberry tree, called KUWA in Japan. Wood from the KUWA mulberry tree is extremely precious and expensive. The wood is very fine and beautiful and its grain has a fascinating dark sheen. The wood is heavy and hard, requiring advanced techniques and much time for woodworking. Japanese wooden crafts made from the KUWA mulberry tree are highly prized and sought after, especially for use in tea ceremony.

In woodworking, it is especially difficult to create a perfect airtight fit between the body and lid, but this is required for a quality Chazutsu to keep the green tea fresh. The technique requires enormous effort and craftsmanship. The wood is carefully dried for several years to ensure that it is completely dry. When the artisan carves the wood, the expansion and contraction by wood grain are factored into the calculation.

Surprisingly, this is finished without any coating like lacquer or another in order to maximize the beauty of the wood grain and wood surface. This deepens in atmosphere when used carefully over time.

A long time ago, KUWA mulberry trees had been planted in Japan because the KUWA leaves were fed to silk worms. Today, there are few silk farms in Japan, so unfortunately it has become more difficult to source KUWA wood.

This Chazutsu has the majestic aura and the extraordinary beauty which emanate from the wood grain and wood surface. You will understand why tea masters have admired the beauty of KUWA mulberry tree throughout Japanese history.

The capacity is 40 to 50g for loose leaf tea.
This is also suitable for use as a NATSUME Matcha container.
