Handcrafted Matcha Bowl, diameter: 5.51inch (14cm), height: 2.56inch (6.5cm), flat style matcha bowl
Sophisticated Shigaraki-Yaki
Made by Hozan Tanii
For this item, the artist Mr. Tanii imagined "green sprouts" and created this with the atmosphere of mid-spring. The name of this matcha bowl HOHSYUN means "balmy spring" in Japanese.
The vibrant green color of the inside bottom of this bowl characterizes springtime in Japan. This special green glaze is called BEEDORO, which is one of the glazes traditionally used for Shigaraki Yaki. However, the application of this glaze is a very unique and radical technique from the standpoint of both historical background of Shigaraki Yaki and modern Japanese ceramics. And in order to emphasize this delicate green glaze, Mr. Tanii has created not the standard matcha bowl form but a unique flat style. As a result, this matcha bowl creates an atmosphere of warmth in springtime, the comfort of feeling a gentle wind outdoors, and softness.
The white glaze is based on NAMAKO glaze, developed around the beginning of the 20th century by Naokata Tanii, who was six generations before Hozan, and was well-known for his quality Shigaraki Yaki. The traditional NAMAKO glaze has been updated in a modern style. The brown color is created by soil containing fine iron. The burnt iron has a faint glimmer or shine, and the technique is known as iron solubilization.
When you drink matcha from this bowl, the vivid and delicate green glaze appears from beneath the fresh green matcha. It would be lovely to see.

Hozan Tanii
Hozan Tanii was born in 1953. He graduated from the technical art department at Osaka Art University. And he took over the third generation of Tanikan Kiln in 1983. He is one of only a few artisans who explore the infinite beauty, depth, and range of clay itself, in contrast to the many artisans who explore glaze colors or printing. He has and makes full use of fourteen kinds of kilns and several tens of thousands kinds of glaze in order to bring out the boundlessness possibility of earthen clay. He frequently goes to the mountain in Shigaraki where he lives and collects clay. He has continued to experiment using the clay he finds and tries to bring out the infinite possibility of clay for over 30 years. All of his arts are well-planned and elaborated in various view points, beauty, function, usefulness, and so on. In addition, made from sustainable natural elements, his creations work symbiotically with the earth's ecosystem.
