Traditional Akita woodcraft

To preserve freshness, high quality green tea should be stored in an airtight container away from heat and moisture. Chazutsu is specially designed to keep your green tea fresh.

The inside of this Chazutsu is handcrafted with steel following Japanese tradition. The surface is covered with cherry tree bark, a traditional craft of Akita Prefecture in northeast Japan. Akita Prefecture is known for quality traditional woodcraft decorated with cherry tree bark, also known as KABA ZAIKU.

It is said that KABA ZAIKU started in Akita in the 18th century. It requires much effort, for example, removing bark from the cherry tree, drying, uniform shaping, application, and so on. From ancient times, it has been said that KABA ZAIKU containers maintain humidity inside, and they are ideal for preserving dried stuff such as tea leaves, medicinal herbs, tobacco, and so on.

Would you add this handcrafted Chazutsu to your tea accessories?
